Chapter 8: Becoming Fat-Adapted

The purpose of a keto diet is to make you adapt to fat instead of carbs. As soon as you become fat-adapted, your body becomes able to convert fat into energy.

Remember: there is a difference between being fat-adapted and being in ketosis.

If you want to adapt to fat, you need to try your best to reach ketosis and stay there. Now, let’s check out some signs that you are using fat as a fuel. This will help you understand the difference between being fat-adapted and burning fat.


Signs of Being in Ketosis

In ketosis, your body is in a natural state. However, you will go through significant changes. During the first 30 days, it will be hard for your body to adapt to the changes. You will experience some transient side effects as well, such as:

  • A higher level of energy throughout the day
  • Reduced hunger
  • Keto breath
  • Frequent urination
  • Dry mouth

Keep in mind that being fat-adapted and being in ketosis is not the same thing. For instance, if you wake up after a 12-hour fasting, doesn’t mean your body has not become fat-adapted. The fact of the matter is that ketosis is a state where your body produces ketones. Usually, you will need at least two to three weeks to become totally fat-adapted.


What is Fat-Adaption?

Once your body gets its required energy from fat, it can access an always-available source of energy. As a result, you feel reduced cravings and you feel satisfied even when you don’t eat a lot.

You will crave for foods rich in fat instead of sugar and starch. In the morning, if you get up and crave for bacon and eggs rather than a muffin or bagel, know that your diet is working well for you.

Once you become fat-adapted, your reliance on carbs for energy will come down, which means you can remain full of energy throughout the day.

If you tap into a new source of energy, you won’t experience a rapid change in your fitness plateaus. Moreover, you will be able to retain glycogen in your liver and muscles. This will help you do your intense workouts without worrying about lack of energy.

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to become 100% fat-adapted in one day. However, you should stick to your keto diet. You will experience the true results of your ketogenic diet after a couple of weeks.
