Chapter 2: Ketogenic Diet Vs Other Diets

Some people are of the opinion that the keto diet falls under the category of Paleo, IIFYM, and Atkins. Although all of these diets are similar, there are a few things that make keto different from all the other major diet types. So, it’s important to understand the difference.

The Atkins Diet VS Ketogenic Diet

During the first few weeks of the Atkins diet, your carb intake is reduced to 15 to 30 grams in 24 hours, not more than that. It works almost the same way in the keto diet, which triggers the process of fat burning rather than burns the glycogen to produce energy.

The stage in the Atkins diet involves the addition of carbohydrates. The quantity is limited, though.

The primary factor that differentiates the two diets is that the Atkins diet allows you to have as much protein as you want. What attracts most people to Atkins is that it allows them to eat all the foods as long as they don’t contain carbohydrates. As a result, they binge on low-quality foods. Consequently, they are more likely to suffer from a number of health issues.

Those who eat healthy on the Atkins diet tend to consume more protein in order to fill the “gap” left by lower intake of carbs. Consuming too much protein can make it harder for you to keep your weight under control.

If you want to keep losing weight, you need to make a few changes to your diet. For instance, you can replace an ingredient in your recipe or opt for a different diet menu:

Below is what you can do:

  • Consuming vegetables, fruits, beans, and oats as they are high in fiber and carbohydrates
  • Reducing your intake of saturated fat and raising your intake of unsaturated fat
  • Eating different types of fresh fruits and veggies
  • Avoiding fast/processed foods
  • Drinking purified water
  • Replacing coffee with tea, especially the green, white and oolong types
  • Eating dark chocolates

Although the Atkins diet involves healthy foods, it does contain plenty of fat and carbohydrates. Moreover, it is not designed for weight loss. However, research studies show that an anti-inflammatory diet may boost one’s metabolism. The purpose of this diet is to help dieters make healthier choices.

Paleo Diet VS Keto Diet

The Paleo diet shares similar characteristics. It leaves out fast/processed food, grains, and dairy and focuses more on balancing the macronutrients, such as protein, carbohydrates and fat.

If you are on the Paleo diet, you won’t need to worry about calories. In other words, you don’t have any restriction as far as eating is concerned.

You just need to add the “right” food to your diet.

The concept of Paleo diet is easy to understand. Let’s go back in time to see how this diet started. Now, we are in the era when we, humans, used to hunt and collect. While humans have been on this planet for thousands of years, know that we have not changed much as far as our dietary needs are concerned.

Now, you might be thinking why humans of today are obese, out of shape and stressed out. Actually, the reason is that we depend a lot on the food sources at a mass level. In other words, we rely on corn, rice, pasta, and bread, just to name a few.

The purpose of a paleo diet is to consume foods that our bodies are designed to consume, such as vegetables, fresh fruits, seafood, and grass-fed meats, to name a few.

In layman’s terms, what you need to do is avoid processed foods, sugar and grains. It’s even better if you leave out dairy products as well. The reason is that most animals don’t drink milk after they have grown up. Basically, paleo diet wants you to go back to the animal kingdom.

Paleo is also called the gluten-free diet. While the diet offers tons of benefits, you may also want to consider the drawbacks. If you keep away from gluten for a long period of time, your body may not be able to tolerate gluten anymore. Moreover, if you have don’t have a solid diet plan, you may not be able to get certain nutrients like vitamin D.

The goal of most of the other diets is to make your health better through a restricted food consumption. In other words, you have to go on a balanced diet.

The Keto diet is a lot different. Actually, other diets don’t depend upon the natural process of burning fuel in your body.

The major difference between Keto and other diets is that the keto diet adds a good deal of healthy fats in an attempt to train your body to consume the fat first. If you eat specific foods that contain no carbohydrates but a lot of fat and protein, your body goes into the ketosis mode. Once this happens, your body will start consuming ketones to produce energy as an alternative to glucose.

Ketogenic diet doesn’t take ages to deliver results. In fact, you will soon see a significant reduction in your weight and a clear improvement in your mental focus and energy.

No matter what your diet goals may be, make sure you get in touch with your doctor prior to adopting the keto diet. Based on your health needs and other factors, your doctor may decide whether the keto diet is good for you.
